Why does pancreatitis develop in adults and children

After a plentiful feast, acute pain can sometimes appear right in the hypochondrium, excruciating vomiting. Such symptoms most often indicate the development of pancreatitis. What is a disease? And what are the causes of pancreatitis in children and adults?

A bit about the disease
An inflammatory pathology that affects the pancreas is called pancreatitis. The disease can occur in acute (in the form of painful attacks) or in a chronic form (imperceptibly destroying an organ).

The pancreas is located behind the stomach, in the region of the hypochondrium. The organ has an elongated shape and lies transversely. That is why the pain that occurs in the case of an inflammatory process in the pancreas is often girdle.
Development mechanism
Before talking about the causes of pancreatitis, you need to understand the mechanism of the development of the disease. So, the cells of the pancreas produce digestive enzymes. Initially, they are synthesized in an inactive form. Through a special duct, which merges with the bile duct, such enzymes enter directly into the duodenum. It is here that they are activated and provide the breakdown of food.

Sometimes a crash may occur. As a result of some factors, pancreatic juice does not enter the duodenum. Enzyme activation occurs directly in the pancreas. In this case, the splitting and digestion of organ tissues begins. The inflammatory process starts.

As a result, the cells of the pancreas are gradually destroyed and replaced by connective or fatty. Such cells are not able to perform the functions of the pancreas.

Causes of Pancreatitis
Several decades ago, pancreatitis was mainly found in elderly patients. Moreover, men are much more likely than women. Today, symptoms of the disease are found in young people and even in children.

Doctors believe that the reason for the high prevalence of pancreatitis is associated with excessive use of energy, soda, addiction to fast food, early alcoholization.

The main causes of pancreatitis in adults
Various factors can start the process of “self-eating” in the pancreas. Among them, the most common causes are:

Alcohol abuse. Hot drinks increase the concentration of enzymes in pancreatic fluid. The latter thickens. Her progression along the ducts slows down. Therefore, enzymes are activated, not reaching the duodenum. In addition, alcoholic drinks cause a spasm of the sphincter, controlling the withdrawal of pancreatic juice into the intestine. Under the influence of alcohol, it may not open on time. This leads to a blockage of pancreatic juice in the duct.
Cholelithiasis. To understand how inflammation of an organ occurs, you need to consider its anatomical structure. The pancreatic duct is connected to the bile duct. And it is this common duct that is excreted into the duodenum. In other words, pancreatic juice initially combines with bile, and then this mixture enters the intestine. If stones are formed in the gallbladder, then they can budge and enter the duct. Calculi easily block the exit, thereby causing stagnation of pancreatic juice.
Unhealthy diet. Overuse of spicy, fried foods can lead to pancreatitis. Overeating on an empty stomach and in combination with alcohol is especially dangerous. That is why attacks of pancreatitis often happen after the holidays.

Additional reasons
The following factors can lead to inflammation of the organ:

previous operations on the gallbladder, ducts, stomach;
inflammatory processes in the abdominal cavity;
abdominal injuries;
infectious diseases (viral hepatitis, influenza, mumps);
hormonal imbalance;
the use of certain medications (antibiotics, estrogens);
helminthic infestations;
an abnormal structure (congenital or acquired) of the duct (pathological narrowing, tumor compression);
violation of metabolic processes;
genetic predisposition;
vascular pathology.
Features of the disease
Pancreatitis can disturb both adults and children. Moreover, pathology is not uncommon in babies. If we talk about the causes of pancreatitis in children, then they are somewhat different from the sources of pathology in adults.

Causes of childhood pancreatitis
If in adults, the pancreas most often becomes inflamed against the background of overeating and alcohol abuse, then in children the main reason for the pathology is trauma. Unsuccessful fall from a bicycle, incorrect jumps, fights with blows to the stomach can lead to pancreatitis.

In addition, the following points can cause inflammation in children:

helminthic infestations (ascariasis);
abuse of junk food (chips, fast food, smoked meats, sweet soda);
abnormal structure of the digestive system;
lactase deficiency;
infectious diseases.

Causes of pancreatitis in men
It is the stronger sex that often suffers from pathology. This is due to men’s views on life.
