Runny nose with blood – what does it mean?

A runny nose alone does not indicate severe pathology. It periodically appears in all people. This symptom indicates a cold. But if there is blood in the discharge from the nose, then this phenomenon is alarming. What pathologies can a runny nose with blood talk about? How to act in a similar situation?

The main causes of a runny nose with blood
Bloody rhinitis can occur as a result of pathological or physiological causes. To understand what is at stake, it is necessary to consider the structure of the nasal mucosa.

Outside, the inner membrane is covered with not keratinized epithelium with movable cilia. This epithelial layer protects the respiratory system from the penetration of viruses, foreign elements, and dust. A lot of metabolic processes take place in the nasal mucosa. Such reactions require a large amount of nutrients. Therefore, many vessels are localized in the mucosa, which provide an influx of necessary components.

Any nasal injuries may be accompanied by damage to the capillary. And it causes bleeding. Moreover, the strength and frequency of this phenomenon depends on the individual structure of the mucosa, the state of the vessels.
Physiological reasons
Thinking about why bleeding from the nose goes bleeding, do not rush to ascribe to yourself all the most difficult diagnoses. The culprits of the problem often become completely harmless reasons that can be easily eliminated on their own. So, the main factors leading to an unpleasant phenomenon.

Dry air
In a room with excessively dry air, the nasal mucosa withers. Capillaries lose their natural elasticity and become fragile. Any voltage (for example, normal blowing) will damage them.

Dry air may cause a runny nose with blood
Intense Blowing
This is another fairly common cause of a runny nose with an admixture of blood. If a person is bothered by copious discharge, then he wants to blow his nose as best as possible. Such an intensive cleansing of the nasal passages causes a strong load on the vessels. The latter do not stand up and burst.

Mechanical damage
Blood clots that appear in the nasal discharge may indicate mechanical injury to the mucosa. Such damage is usually caused during picking in the nose, cleansing the moves with a cotton swab or an aspirator, and the unsuccessful use of a pipette (during instillation).

Individual feature
Some people are naturally fragile vessels. Any tension is immediately accompanied by bleeding. As a rule, a person encounters such a feature in early childhood.

Hormonal disruption
Adolescents may experience sudden bleeding against a runny nose. Often this problem torments pregnant women. The cause of the unpleasant symptom is a hormonal disorder.

Spasms of blood vessels
Vasospasm, causing the appearance of blood from the nose, is observed with increased physical exertion. Such complaints are found in people climbing to great heights (for example, going uphill). Sometimes cramps occur during sudden temperature jumps or a change in climate.

Abuse of vasoconstrictor drops
Such drugs are useful for the common cold. They constrict blood vessels, relieve swelling of the mucosa and contribute to improved discharge of mucus. The use of vasoconstrictor drops is allowed no more than seven days. Abuse of the drug leads to addiction, after which the person increases the dosage. This extremely negatively affects the state of the vessels.

Do not abuse nose drops
Pathological causes
The sources of the problem are not always so harmless. Sometimes the reasons may lie in serious pathological processes taking place in the body. Usually they testify to themselves with quite expressive symptoms. Most often, such problems occur.

Viral infections
The common cold almost always starts the same way. A man is bothered by a runny nose. Allocations are transparent and liquid. After a few days, they are able to change their texture and color.

With a viral or bacterial infection, green discharge is observed. Yellow or brown indicate purulent inflammatory processes. Moreover, often with a running cold, a runny nose with blood appears. This is caused by weakened immune defenses and thinning of the mucosa. As a result, blood vessels can be damaged spontaneously.

The source of an unpleasant symptom can be not only ARVI, but also flu, bronchitis and many other viral infections.
This pathology combines several unpleasant diseases at once. The most common of these is sinusitis. It occurs against the background of infection in the respiratory tract. Pathogenic microorganisms begin to multiply actively. Mucus accumulates in the sinuses.

With sinusitis, complaints of a severe headache occur. The latter is greatly enhanced by tilting down. Pain and a feeling of heaviness are disturbing in the area under the eyes (this is the area of the maxillary sinuses). The desire to cleanse the nose leads to overstrain and rupture of blood vessels.
