How to distinguish a sore throat from a cold

Angina, probably, at least once in his life, everyone was ill. What is this disease? What are its causes, and most importantly, what to do with angina?

An acute infection that affects mainly the palatine tonsils is a sore throat, or, strictly scientifically, acute tonsillitis.

What are the causes of angina?
This infection is mainly caused by bacteria, mainly streptococcus. But the pathogen is both a fungus and a virus.

Often, angina becomes a complication of a respiratory viral infection, the well-known SARS. Then they talk about joining a bacterial infection.

How is angina transmitted? Most people get infected with sore throat by airborne droplets, although transmission of the infection through household items is also sometimes found.

As a rule, children, elderly and weakened people suffer from tonsillitis. And this is no coincidence. The fact is that tonsils are organs of the immune system and one of their functions is not to let pathogenic microbes pass into the body. But when the immunity is not strong enough, weakened by other diseases, tonsils do not cope with the task of protection, are affected by pathogenic microorganisms and their inflammation develops.

When immunity weakens, bacteria inhabit the human body
The reasons contributing to the occurrence of tonsillitis include:

chronic tonsillitis – sluggish inflammation of the tonsils, developed as a result of untreated tonsillitis;
the existing foci of infection in the oral, nasal cavity, pharynx – carious teeth, sinusitis, adenoids, etc.
general hypothermia and hypothermia of the throat;
continuous inhalation of dirty air, for example in hazardous industries.
What is a sore throat?

According to the degree of damage to the tonsils, they distinguish:

catarrhal sore throat – the inflammatory process captures the mucous membrane of the tonsils, they are red and swollen. This is the easiest form of the disease;
lacunar tonsillitis – lacunae are affected – the tortuous canals of the tonsils, a characteristic sign is white plaque;
follicular tonsillitis – in this case, follicles filled with pus appear on the tonsils – this is a severe form of acute tonsillitis;
combined tonsillitis – both lacunar and follicular tonsillitis simultaneously develop. It is very difficult.
How is angina manifested?
This acute infection begins violently:

high temperature – 38 ° C and above, depending on the form of tonsillitis;
general weakness malaise;
Angina usually manifests itself with high fever.
All these symptoms are also characteristic of other infections, in particular flu, SARS. How to distinguish a sore throat from other colds and infectious diseases? Sore throat has one characteristic feature – a sore throat, and not a tickle, as with SARS or pharyngitis, namely pain. In this case, pain occurs when swallowing, even with “empty” swallowing.

Other signs of the disease:

red throat (catarrhal form), white plaque or the appearance of pustules;
swelling of the lymph nodes,
bad breath.
Can angina be without temperature
Sometimes acute tonsillitis is atypical, that is, with normal or slightly elevated temperature. This happens mainly in adults, if the sore throat is catarrhal.

Without fever, tonsillitis affects people who have sharply reduced immunity. These are the elderly, as well as people suffering from immunodeficiency (HIV, AIDS, hepatitis C, cancer).

Normal temperature in acute tonsillitis is observed in women expecting a baby, which is associated with hormonal changes in the body.

Often such a sore throat is taken for a cold illness and is not treated. And this can cause severe complications or the disease becomes chronic.
Sore throat can be caused by a fungal infection. Then the patient does not have characteristic symptoms: pain and discomfort when swallowing, headache, weakness. And the disease will manifest itself with a cheesy coating on the tonsils, drying out of the mouth, an unpleasant odor.

What to do with angina?
If you notice signs of a sore throat, you should consult a specialist. You can’t prescribe medication or try to cope with the disease using grandmother’s methods. With a sore throat are not joking. If not treated or treated incorrectly, you can earn:

chronic tonsillitis, and then tonsillitis will torment you regularly;
bronchitis, laryngitis or abscess;
rheumatism of the joints or heart;
pyelonephritis or glomerulonephritis.
Decoctions of herbs help with tonsillitis
As a rule, with angina, they drink antibiotics. Which ones – the doctor chooses. But antibiotics alone are not enough.

To remove suppuration, gargle every hour and a half with herbal decoctions, a solution of soda with salt, furatsilin, chlorhexidine, etc. After rinsing for half an hour you can not drink and eat.

Tonsils are irrigated with antimicrobials.

If the temperature has risen to 38 ° C and above, antipyretic drugs are needed, for young children, wraps are recommended.

To relieve swelling, you can use antihistamines.

Special lollipops will help to remove the pain.

With angina, you need to drink a lot, warm juice will be especially useful.

Food should be soft and warm (neither hot nor cold) so as not to irritate the sore throat.
